I have no idea how to explain to you how my journey of " no brand new" is going. Life at the moment in this modern world is like riding a wild horse bareback, hanging on for dare life but secretly wishing you could fall off so it would stop for a moment. The death of my beloved Nana, the organization of a funeral, an unliveable house and coordination of a renovation, living with my parents, a husband who's under work pressure, the joys and demands of being a first time mum, and the fact that I'm a Librian who can't make a decision to save myself nor find my keys and forgets how to put up a buggy has made for a very interesting couple of weeks!! So how is my "no band new going"....I have a big problem...
In your eyes I may have already failed my challenge of "no brand new" but taking advice from the wonderful Einstein and his secret to problem solving I believe I have only made this challenge more worthwhile. So what's the problem? I brought something!!! I brought a brand new toilet and vanity for the bathroom ahhhhhhh!! Why??? Because I couldn't bring myself to buy a second hand toilet especially with a toddler in the house, and I couldn't find a second hand vanity that would fit the space. But I can fix this problem!!! I have Einstein to help and according to him "the quality of the solutions we come up with will be in direct proportion to the quality of the description of the problem we are trying o solve" Taking this on board the problem isn't simply that I have vowed to not buy brand new, and I have broken my vow. The real description of the problem is that I vowed to not buy brand new in order to live a more sustainable & minimalistic life, to learn and to grow as a person so now that I have brought brand new how can i learn from this?
I have learnt that in a renovation it is very difficult to obstain from anything brand new. For example is it even possible to purchase second hand gib? If you had a lot of time up your sleeve you could possible source a second hand door locks with matching keys and used vanities that need to fit in tricky spaces, unfortunately time isn't a gift that I have. I have also learnt that it's your principals and morals that matter the most & if I have a passion for re using, re inventing then what other ways can I carry out this passion other than not buying brand new? So within this question lays the answer to my problem, and adds a greater depth to my challenge...for every brand new item I "can't avoid" buying through nessesisty I will sell the original item that I'm replacing on trademe for $1 reserve and donate all proceeds to a charity of the buyers choice. Therefore encouraging others to buy second hand, helping some really cool charities out there that do some amazing things for our planet and its people and lastly putting a fire blanket over my red hot guilt and slight embarassment in justifying that this challenge is going to be a lot more complex than I first thought.
So currently up for grabs we have a ceramic toilet with wooden seat & vanity will be listed this weekend...ready set go!!! Links below to trademe auctions.
